English Heritage : Market Research

English Heritage logo GVA RGA were commissioned by English Heritage to carrying out research to answer the question ‘what makes a garden great for visiting?’ With a portfolio of more than 400 historic sites, some of which are stand-alone gardens and others historic houses with gardens, English Heritage wanted to know what people want from a visit to a garden, what they hope to see, and what educational and leisure facilities they feel should be provided.

We also looked further afield as part of the research process, investigating other gardens both in the UK and abroad to seek examples of best practice and to try and find out what drives the visitor numbers at places like Wisley and Versailles.

English Heritage aim to be as period correct in their plantings and layout as possible, but also depicting the grandeur and colourfulness of gardening, this gives visitors an holistic experience of both house and garden together.

GVA RGA, in collaboration with the client, developed a robust research methodology including a face to face quantitative visitor questionnaire, a series of entry and exit in-depth qualitative visitor interviews, focus groups and an electronic survey. From this we were able to pull together the necessary information to develop a series of recommendations for English Heritage.
